A DAY IN THE HAGUE: FROM SUN TO SURF
The Hague has always been a special place I like coming back to. From strolling through the city as a kid on holiday and admiring the cyclists handling their bikes on the cobblestones to trembling over the pavement today myself.
A day in this city is never the same. On the coast of the North Sea, the weather changes in the blink of an eye. In the morning, the light reflects off the windows of the old gable roofs and brightens up the small alleyways. The sun is usually a rare sight, but once it glances through the clouds, people make the most of it and enjoy their day in cafes along the canals or in parks around the city. On days like these, the area around the Binnenhof and Zeeheldenkwartier are amongst my favorites to take it all in.
And as quickly as the sun appeared, it vanishes behind the clouds that roll in from the sea. Despite the quick change in weather, the Dutch seem unbothered and continue with their activities while I make my way to the beach. What was filled with towels that morning, is now scattered with surfboards. With a bit of luck and a ton of wind, Scheveningen, the coastal district of the Hague, turns into a surfing hotspot. Occasionally, I join in but the comfort of taking photos that day was more soothing to me.
